If there's one thing that makes me weep, it's bassists wasting their time practising exercises that make no musical sense. In this video I cover 4 easy steps that you can use to test if your practice routine is getting you closer to your goals, or if the exercises you're working hard on every day are junk.

    I’ve gotten a horrible muscle pain in my right lower abdomen area and while I don’t know what I did to get this, I think sitting on my couch and playing bass/guitar isn’t helping as my couch is low enough that I feel a lot of pressure in the affected area. Anybody know what is the appropriate height someone should sit at while playing?

      For me the sweet spot seems to be any seat that allows my thighs to be parallel to the floor - this seems to take the pressure off my lower back

    damn. my bass instructor gave me the bass fitness pdf and I started doing it today but couldn't help but check if anybody was reviewing this book and to my surprise it came out with this title lmao. The first thing I noticed about that book was exactly the same thing. Exercises on the book sounded like literal shit but I was doing it since it's just for strength & dexterity. Thank you for your thoughts on this. Great content. Gained a subscriber my man

    Haven't picked up my bass in a very long time. Pleased to know my old practice wasn't bad, I'd been taught the same method for sax guy giving me tips for my flute years ago. But not the up on the way down idea. Thanks. I'm also new to glasses and a similar face shape as you, so I might copy your frames at some point.

    Great lesson! First time in youtube{for me at least) that scale practice is put in context both rhytmically and melodically. And actually understanding the musicality of the approach.

    Damn i wish i had a video like this, 5 years ago. As a self taught, these 4 concepts are the base line of my learning routine now, I slow things down, work my way up by making sure I have good intonation, good control over the sound, I take the time to listen to what i'm about to play, and now and then I also go back to have a listen again, I learn bits by bits like I divide things in phrases, and then put them together as I go on.. But 5 years ago none of that was obvious to me, so I had to learn everything the had way.. I really hope some new students will see this video and make great use of it

    I play left handed, and when i practice sitting down, my bass rests on my right leg (equivalent of left leg for you, i can probably say "inner" leg in this case). i never found it comfortable to rest it on the "outer" leg, i prefer to have the body of the bass between my legs, but i rarely see that done on youtube. the other method is uncomfortable to me, so I'm glad to see it in this video. I also generally have the headstock of the bass at an angle that it is level with my shoulder/head, and i sorta have the neck pushed out slightly. it means my fretting hand (right hand for me) doesn't have a sharp angle, and neither does my plucking hand. but, then my fretting hand can get fatigued for being elevated, so it is tough to navigate. I've only been playing since the end of the 22nd dec, 2023 (as of now, it is afternoon christmas day), so I still have a lot to learn. thanks for this video!

    • @FBT
      @FBT 5 місяців тому

      I think that every position has some sort of drawback, but the 'inner' leg with the bass angled so the headstock is in line with my left eye is my favourite!

    Thanks for your great channel and wonderful transcriptions with analysis! I just subscribed. Regarding ear training, I agree that functional ear trainer is really good. I think hearing chord progressions is one of, if not the most, useful abilities for musicians, and have slowly improved this over the years. I'm sure you're great at it. Might you have any further suggestions as to how to improve this valuable skill? Thanks again.

    • @FBT
      @FBT 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and transcriptions. Hearing chord progressions is one of the hardest but most important things, and I'm not sure that I'm very good at it... I'd suggest starting out with simple pop songs and seeing if you can hear any of the chord changes at all without an instrument in your hands to check. Do any of the sections have the same chord progression? Which chord feels like home? Chances are you can already pick up movements like I - vi or I - IV, so it's really a case of building a mental library of how those chord sequences feel and going from there. Good luck!

    • @FBT
      @FBT 6 місяців тому

      Yes, pretty much - anything that was a synth on the original recording or has a modern pop/dance feel to it will get the octave pedal treatment, regardless of if I'm playing a 4 or 5 string (I use my 3 Leaf Ocatbvre MK1 rather than the MXR, but the pedal doesn't matter that much).
